The coming Maharashtra Assembly session will see the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leaders demanding that birth in the state be added as a requirement for a domicile certificate. The Monsoon Session of the Assembly begins on Monday.
A Domicile Certificate is issued to prove that the person bearing the Certificate is a domicile or resident of the State or union territory by which the certificate is being issued. Currently,a person living in Maharashtra for at least 15 years immediately preceding his demand is eligible for it.
In view of the growing locals-versus-outsiders agitations in the state, the government had in the last two years introduced the domicile clause for admission into colleges, for buying houses in government housing schemes and for employment in some sectors. A person has to be born here to be called a Maharashtrian. Just living here for 15 years is not enough. One has to be born here as well to be eligible for a domicile certificate. We will be pressing for such changes during the upcoming Assembly session, said MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar.
MNS will join the Opposition parties in taking the government to task over its education policies, fuel price hike and the border row.
The state government has failed in proving its stand in the Belgaum border issue. There have been several all party resolutions in the house voicing support to residents of the villages in Belgaum region. We will take up the issue in the session, said Nandgaonkar.
