Addressing the increasing complaints of apple-laden trucks being stuck at sensitive points across the apple belt of Shimla, the district police have posted additional police force, including two more deputy superintendents of police (DSPs). At least 50 more police personnel and 25 home guards have been deputed at various points.

The entire apple belt from Shimla, via Kharapathar in Jubbal-Kotkhai to Rohru has been divided into four sectors and put under the charge of four DSPs. A 24-hour police patrol on these stretches would ensure immediate solution to traffic jams and other problems in apple transportation, said Superintendent of Police R M Sharma.

“The additional force has been equipped with walkie-talkies for coordination. Besides the DSPs of Rohru and Theog, two more DSPs have been deputed to keep a strict watch over the law and order situation,” he added.

Sharma said earth moving machines have been kept ready at sensitive areas prone to landslides. At many narrow points on the road, directions have been given to make provision for one-way movement of traffic.

Shimla Deputy Commissioner J S Rana is also said to have directed the Chinese road and bridges company working on widening of Shimla-Hatkoti stretch not to undertake road cutting work for a few days and focus on maintenance of the treacherous stretches for smooth movement of apple-laden trucks.
