Adequate forces to conduct Assembly polls in Jharkhand: PC

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday said the Centre would provide adequate forces to conduct Assembly elections in Jharkhand.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday said the Centre would provide adequate forces to conduct Assembly elections in Jharkhand and asserted the Naxal problem would not come in the way of holding peaceful polls there.

“We will provide additional forces as requested by the Election Commission so that election takes place peacefully… Naxal problem will not come in the way of holding peaceful elections,” he told a news conference here.

To another query,he said he did not know what attitude the CPI (Maoist) would take (on the elections in Jharkhand),but their boycott call during Maharashtra elections was rejected by the people of that state.

“In fact,in Gadchirolli there was a record turn-out,” he said apparently referring to the pre-poll Maoist attack on a police party there which had not deterred the voters.

Asked if security forces would launch operations against the Maoists,he said words like ‘launch’ and ‘offensive’ were coined by the media. “We don’t use such words. I have never used the word in any of my statements. You can go and check that,” he said.

“The Centre comes to their aid and assistance. We provide central para-military forces. (And) it is the state police which will decide what action would be taken and where it should be taken.”
