While online admissions for first year degree courses in Mumbai University (MU) will be launched only from the next academic year, the varsity has instructed all colleges and students to fill online admission forms from this year itself — even after admissions have been secured. Calling it a trial run for online admissions next year, MU has now made it mandatory for all first-year students to fill online forms.
"Though the actual process of online admissions will be flagged off from the next academic year, as part of a trial run, we have instructed all students who have secured admissions to first-year degree courses to fill these forms. Besides, students filling up the forms on their own will ensure that there are no errors in the details," said a senior MU official. The varsity has made it clear that colleges will have to ensure that their students fill the admission forms on the Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Ltd. (MKCL) portal and any form submitted in the middle of the academic year will not be accepted. The varsity and MKCL have already conducted a training programme for 800 representatives from 400 colleges affiliated to MU on the technical aspects of online admissions.
Experts said degree college students are experienced to fill admission forms online and should not have to visit colleges to do so. This would also save time and manpower. Dr V N Magare, principal of Kirti M Doongursee College, Dadar, said: "If implemented systematically, this process would prove very beneficial for students and colleges. MU is currently monitoring all possible aspects, including whether colleges are capable to carry out online admissions and have enough facilities to do so. I think making admission process online for degree colleges will be of great help." Some felt that the online admissions scheme will not work for colleges with in-house quota. "The online admissions will prove helpful for students who take admissions in professional and self-financing programmes, such as Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM), Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) and Bachelor of Financial Markets (BFM).
