Admissions under RTE: Govt announces common schedule

Calming the fraying nerves of parents in the city, the government announced the common admission schedule for schools that will be applicable only for admissions in the 25 per cent category reserved under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. The government also directed that the schools are required to keep 25 per cent seats reserved but can go ahead with the admissions for the rest of the seats.

"Schools must follow the governments directives for admissions into the 25 per cent reserved seats. The rest of the admissions can be done as per the school's schedule," said Sreedhar Salunke, state director of education (primary and secondary).

As per the schedule displayed in the Directorate of Education's website, all schools must start issuing application forms from January 11 to 30. From February 1 to15, the application forms will be scrutinised after which the list of candidates eligible for admission under the scheme will be compiled.

If the number of applications received is more than the available seats in a particular school, lists will be compiled from February 16 to 20 to decide who gets admission.

Once the candidates are shortlisted, schools are required to declare the list of admitted students besides displaying the waiting list on the schools' website from February 21 to 25.

If the number of applications received are less than the number of available seats under RTE, the schools are supposed to admit all the students who have applied. Till February 28, it is mandatory for schools to produce a report of the admissions under the scheme before the primary education officer of a particular locality.

The regional directorate of education are required to form a committee which will monitor the admission procedure and also address grievances of the parents. The contact information of this monitoring committee will be displayed on school websites and notice boards. The schedule do not apply to standalone pre-schools that have classes only up to senior KG.
