The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate,L K Advani, has slammed the UPA government for withdrawing the Red Corner Notice against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi.

Advani was speaking to media at Dum Dum airport on Wednesday morning before hitting the campaign trail in various districts of Bengal. In the evening returned to Ahmedabad.

“Qattrocchi has a secret understanding with Congress top brass and that is why the notice was withdrawn. If he is allowed to go scot-free it will be harmful to our country. The CBI is being used by the UPA to give him a clean chit,” the BJP leader said.

The Italian businessman is involved in the corruption case linked with the Bofors deal.

“The Bofors scam was the biggest scandal in Independent India and has still remained unresolved. So much money was gobbled up and nothing has been unearthed,” Advani said.

The BJP leader criticised the Congress for taking support of the Left for forming the government after 2004 elections. “It was a totally opportunistic alliance formed to ward off the BJP. But the Congress realized their mistake later,” he added.

Interestingly,Advani had a soft stand towards Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee. “She is a good poitician and a great fighter. She had always fought against the CPM but never against the BJP,” he said.
