Two days after United Democratic Party legislator Ampareen Lyngdoh resigned from the party and the Assembly, her party colleague and former transport minister Nimarson Momin followed suit.
The resignations have put paid to the efforts of the recently dismissed Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) coalition government — UDP is one of its constituents — to return to power after Governor R S Mooshahary imposed Central rule in the state and put the Assembly under animated suspension.
The party’s strength has now been reduced to eight legislators. With Governor Mooshahary sending out a message to the Centre to consider revoking President Rule, the Congress doesn’t look far from being invited to form the next government.
All the 27 MPA legislators are likely to resign if the Congress is invited to form the Government, said MPA spokesman Conrad Sangma. A meeting will be held on Saturday to take a final decision.
The NCP-UDP-led MPA coalition government had survived the confidence motion recently with the casting vote of Assembly Speaker Bindo M Lanong when it was tied with the Congress-led MUA at 27 votes each.
The MPA has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the imposition of President Rule and dismissal of the MPA Government that is scheduled to be heard on April 13.
