Karzai declared victor of the Afghan tumultuous ballot.

Afghanistan's election commission proclaimed President Hamid Karzai the victor of the country's tumultuous ballot on Monday, canceling a planned runoff and ending a political crisis that began with a fraud-marred first round two and a half months ago.

The Obama administration has anxiously been waiting for a government deemed legitimate to emerge in Kabul before announcing whether to deploy tens of thousands more American troops to fight the burgeoning insurgency.

The cancellation of Saturday's vote came one day after former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah announced he was pulling out less than a week before the Nov 7 vote. Abdullah said the ballot would not have been fair and accused the Karzai-appointed Independent Election Commission of bias.

The annulment is a huge relief to organisers who were scrambling to hold the election before the onset of Afghanistan's harsh winter, as well as authorities who feared a wave of bloody violence on polling day after a Taliban spokesman threatened attacks against anyone who took part.

Independent Election Commission chairman Azizullah Lodin announced Karzai the winner during a news conference in Kabul.

"His excellency Hamid Karzai, who has won the majority of votes in the first round and is the only candidate for the second round, is declared by the Independent Election Commission as the elected president of Afghanistan," Lodin said.

Karzai has led Afghanistan since US forces invaded to oust the Taliban in 2001. He won elections in 2004 and his latest victory will give him another five-year mandate.

The US will have to find a way to work with the Afghan leader, who has fallen out of favour in Washington after openly criticising US military tactics, including the heavy use of air power that has killed many civilians.

Kahzai winnder.By: gurmit singh | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward It is a matter of great salvation that Karzai has again been declared as President of war-torn Afghanistan. He is in a mood not to allow Afghanistan to fall a prey to the Talibans from him it was emancipated long back and who ruled tyrannical manner much to the chagrin of its own citizen Large scale exodus of people had vitiated the matter. Karzai, whatever his foibles with his compatriots, has taken upon himself the responsibility of makng Afghanistan a place worth living with dignity and any soft corner with the Talibans is the negation of all purposes of civic liberty. US is there to stay with the requisite number of its military and ammunition till the Talibans are vanquished. India is also helping in many ways as a good neighbour. Karzai visited India many times to get help to restore normaly in his country. Let us hope during Karzai's second stint as President, Afghanistan progresses significantly in controlling the extremists forces and reconstruction of his country.
Winning Easier than Performing for Mr KarzaiBy: Rahul Bhonsle | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward With his fellow contestant having pulled out, "short of money" as per some sources, winning the second round was never a problems for Mr Karzai who had just under the mandatory 50 percent in the first.Despite the massive fraud and rigging exposed by the UN body, Election Complaints Commission, Karzai's vote dropped only by about 7-8 percent. So none will grudge Mr Karzai the victory. Thankfully President Obama who had send the wrong vibes earlier has greeted the Afghan President on his victory. When will Dr Manmohan Singh does so remains to be seen? What is however important is that given the mandate by the people, Mr Karzai would now have to work through a maze of challenges that the country in virtual civil war faces from building ethnic coagulation to bringing down corruption and improving performance of the local government. This task will not be easy, all we can do is wish Mr Karzai good luck for winning the elections may prove easier than performing well in Afghanistan
