Former Afghan presidential challenger Abdullah Abdullah on Wednesday welcomed stepped-up US pressure on President Hamid Harzai to crackdown on corruption.
"It's good that they are pushing for reforms. It's good that they are calling for anti-corruption policies. These are the calls of the people of Afghanistan," Abdullah said in a programme.
"First and foremost that's what the people of Afghanistan need: good governance, no corruption, upholding the rule of law".
Massive fraud uncovered in the August 20 presidential election highlighted the scale of graft in Afghanistan's government and has led to enormous international pressure on Karzai to address the problem.
Election officials declared Karzai the winner this month when Abdullah abandoned a run-off. With the stakes mounting for an alliance of foreign troops battling a Taliban insurgency, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday that Washington would seek specific action, not just promises, to end corruption in Afghanistan.
"We are very clear that we will be expecting more from the government of Afghanistan," Clinton said.
