African students beat Mizo youth to death at campus football game

Enraged students,who damaged a hostel building and some vehicles,pelted stones at police

A 22-year-old student of engineering from Mizoram died after he was allegedly assaulted by three African students during a campus football match at the Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara on Tuesday.

Enraged students,who damaged a hostel building and some vehicles,pelted stones at police.

The LPU has been shut for three days. All African students have been asked to leave the campus for the time being.

The match between Sudan Eagles,a team of African students,and another made up of Mizo students turned ugly after Johny Lalhmangaih Zuala scored a goal.

Johny,who was pushed around by 7-9 African players,was allegedly punched and kicked. He died in hospital later. Acting on a statement by LPU security officer,police slapped cases of murder and common intent. Two Sudanese and a Tanzanian have been arrested.

LPU Pro-Chancellor Rashmi Mittal said the unfortunate incident happened because students didnt take the spirit of the game in a positive manner which led to an irreversible loss of a bright student.
