To describe this artist in one word would be a difficult task for those who have seen her act on stage swear by her talent and those who have seen her hands move on canvass can only say how immensely talented she is. She is Neeta Mohindra, who many know as the theatre, film and serial actor with an enviable resume of having worked with greats like MK Raina and Harpal Tiwana.
Just beautiful and compelling are her paintings currently on exhibition at gallery Artmosphere. Neeta Mohindra,a graduate of GCW,Ludhiana, and a resident of Amritsar at present, has brought to this art less town some of her spectacular works under the title,Chehra. For the artists herself, this solo show has come after an hiatus of nearly three and half years. The shades of reds and black with canvasses stitched together for huge images are not compelling, but show-stoppers.
I am a workaholic. I teach,I act and paint, and 24 hours in a day seem good enough for all these activities. When I began doing theatre, there were not many girls in this field and I got all the meaty roles to do. I have done every role that a female artist would aspire to do today. At one point,I reached a stage where whatever I did on stage was applauded, but for me I wanted to do more and learn more. So from Tiwana,I went to MK Raina, where I searched and found myself, explains Neeta, who went on to do critically acclaimed film Kaya Taran.
The ladys search for self is amazing. I have been holding solo exhibitions since the 90s and soon I got bored of the process of having to sit in galleries and so I stopped exhibiting. But for me,painting is like acting. I have actually done a series called Centrestage where I have portrayed the entire process of creating a theatre production on campus. And in one play,I actually paint on stage. So for me painting is no different from acting, says Neeta, whose inspiration for painting is the legendary MF Hussain.
Women have always been a subject close to Neetas heart, for women still have not got their rights. They are not treated equal and issues like female foeticide hurt me. I have propagandist kind of plays on this issue, says Neeta, who is quick to add,But I am not a typical feminist for I am not anti-man.
