  • Almost a year after the UT Administration received crores of rupees for the task; the much-awaited closed-circuit television (CCTVs) cameras are likely to be installed at 156 locations in the city by April end. The Administration had received nearly Rs 4.30 crore from the Chandigarh Police in January 2008; following which the project moved at a snail’s pace and is yet to take off.

The UT officials are now in the process of conducting a final scrutiny of the financial bids received for allotting the project to a suitable company. “We are about to complete the final bid scrutiny. The moment it is done, work shall be allotted to the company which will not take much time,” said a senior official of the UT Engineering department.

According to the model designed for the city, CCTV cameras would be installed on busy locations and roads including Madhya Marg (from Matka chowk to railway lightpoint); Purv Marg; Dakshin Marg (from Industrial Area Phase I-II roundabout to Kissan Bhawan roundabout) and on Jan Marg (from Kisan Bhawan roundabout till Matka chowk). To keep a watch on the anti-social elements, cameras would also be installed in various marketplaces and parking areas of Sector 17, 22 and 35.

The company, which bags the contract, will be connecting the CCTV cameras through underground cables. A round-the-clock vigil shall be maintained while the recorded data would be stored in the police control room. Internet will be used for the online recording of the data captured by the CCTV cameras.

    ... contd.
