After attack, more woes for Brits

Mumbai: Visibly shaken by the Terror attacks on the city which did not spare both locals and foreigners, two British nationals who had witnessed the attack on Café Leopold express their anguish at not being accommodated in a hotel in Colaba.

The mother-son duo, who did not wish to be named, was in Café Leopold at the time when the gunmen opened fire. They were back on the site on Thursday looking for their bags which they had left behind after the firing started. “We were sitting right next to the window and saw the assailant. He was young and was carrying a bag. We immediately ducked and stayed there till he moved on,” said the woman.

“We went to Bluebird Hotel with some foreign nationals we met earlier. They were kind enough to give us lift, but the manager of the hotel didn’t allow there to stay there anymore since we were not carrying our passports. He kept telling us to vacate the room,” she said. Her son added, “We kept telling them that our passports were in the bags which we left behind while running away to save our lives.”

Hotel management, on the other hand, say that they were sticking to the rulebook. They said their license would have got suspended if they allowed the guests without passports inside the hotel.

The woman, however, expressed her shock at being treated with indifference in such a situation. “We even knocked on the doors of the American Express, but they didn’t let us in. We were really scared to be in the city and didn’t feel safe anywhere. Even the cab driver initially refused to take us,” she said.

What a shame. Surely these panic stricken tourists could have been taken care of much better than they were treated. Surely country needs tourists and every effort should have been made to provide them some relief.
