The state government on Monday submitted an affidavit before the Gujarat High Court,claiming to have taken a number of steps to solve immediate,short-term and long-term issues related to cleanliness and hygiene on the huge Civil Hospital campus.

The court is hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking direction to the state authorities to maintain clean and hygienic atmosphere inside this and other government hospitals and at other public places,including roads.

During the last hearing of the petition,a division bench of acting Chief Justice AL Dave and Justice J B Pardiwala had come down heavily on the government for not maintaining the cleanliness and hygienic atmosphere at the hospital where most of the poor people come for treatment.

The PIL was moved by two Ahmedabad residents — Prakash Shah and Ila Pathak — after the junior doctors at the hospital went on a strike over issues of hygiene following deaths of two medicos.

On Monday,the affidavit by the Superintendent of Civil Hospital,M M Prabhakar,was submitted before the court wherein the steps taken by the authorities have been mentioned. Prabhakar has given a detailed report on the steps taken so far after getting a rap from the HC. It states that the government has allocated Rs 310 crore to upgrade and renovate the campus.

The affidavit states that former deputy municipal commissioner Z A Sacha has been appointed as an officer on special duty to supervise the overall cleanliness work on the hospital campus. The authorities have also decided to form a joint management committee headed by Sacha and students,resident doctors,hospital and colleges officials as members to solve immediate,short-term and long-term campus related issues.
