After Parliament attack,Pak feared war, sought help

Cable says Pak sought Gulf intervention to bring India back to negotiating table after Parliament attack.

The Pakistan government sought the intervention of Gulf countries to bring India back on the negotiating table and prevent a war after the stand-off between the two neighbours following the Parliament attack in 2001,reveals a confidential cable released by WikiLeaks.

The cable sent from the US embassy in Jordan on June 6,2006 says that Pakistani diplomat Wasim Sajad visited Amman and sought the intervention of the Jordanian government to prevent a war with India and restart negotiations.

On June 4,veteran Pakistani diplomat Wasim Sajad visited King Abdullah to discuss the Kashmir crisis and requested that the King use his good office to convey to governments around the world the need for India to come back to the negotiating table, the cable reads.

Following this meeting,GOJ Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh contacted the Ambassador to ask officially,at the request of the Pakistani government (GOP),that the USG (US government) do what it can in this regard, it says.

The cable reveals that the Pakistan government wanted to avoid a war with India after India deployed its troops along the LoC in Kashmir following the December 13,2001 attack on Parliament.

According to Tawarneh, the Pakistani envoy said that the GOP wants to avoid war,and will do anything to convince the USG and the world of its sincerity in this regard, says the diplomatic cable.

However, the GOP is concerned that the USG and others misunderstand the GOP posture towards the Kashmir crisis. Sajad reportedly said that the GOP wants to know precisely what it is the USG wants the GOP to do to alleviate the tension, it adds.

The cable reveals that the Jordanian government conveyed the message of Sajad to the then US ambassador in Amman,Edward W Gnehm, but declined to become an intermediary between the USG and India and/or Pakistan.

They (Jordan government) dont expect a direct response from the USG with regard to this matter, the cable says.

The diplomatic cable reveals that the Pakistani envoy also met several other leaders from Gulf countries to seek their intervention.

In addition to his meeting with the King,Sajad had previously met with President Assad in Syria and will subsequently travel to Lebanon and Turkey, the cable says.
