Launching an attack on the UPA government for “bailing out Ottavio Quattrocchi” in the Bofors case, the BJP on Tuesday said that the “UPA’s covert and over designs to bury one of the biggest scandals of Independent India” was driven by the fact that Quattrocchi “knew too much”,some of which could have made the “higher-ups in the present political dispensation uncomfortable”.

BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said “this was the biggest blot on the UPA government” and that “its integrity would always be suspect after today’s action”. He added that today’s was “the fourth in a series of steps taken by the UPA government in the last four years to bail out Quattrocchi in the Bofors pay-off case”.

BJP ally,JD (U),also slammed the move, and its spokesperson Arun Srivastava said: “CBI is used as a political tool by the Congress government and therefore whenever it comes to power, the Bofors pay-off case gets weakened.”

Asked why it failed to act against Quattrocchi during six years of NDA rule at the Centre if it was convinced about the merit of the case,Prasad said there were two judgments passed by the Delhi High Court on the matter against which the government of the day appealed in the Supreme Court and the lower court was “reprimanded for its faulty order”.
