After radio autos, battery autos to run on city roads

After radio autos,it is now the turn for electric autos to run on the city roads.

After radio autos,it is now the turn for electric autos to run on the city roads.

The Administration’s dream to turn Chandigarh into green city will take a new leap when the authorities introduce battery operated autos for public transportation.

Speaking to Newsline,a senior official from State Transport Authority (STA) said,“We have received a proposal from one of the operator and he wants to start service with electric autos. We are studying the proposal. If it is found to be viable, the service can be started, and fare and other related matters would be finalised.”

Apart from the 2,700 LPG-run autos plying on the roads, there are as many as 50 LPG run radio autos.

The administration is also working on improving the public transportation and intends to increase the number of operators for both AC as well as non-AC cabs to avoid any kind of monopoly by operators.

As of now,two operators run AC cabs and there is just one operator for the non-AC cabs. The service of the latter is yet to begin as the operator is still looking for the TATA Magic model, which he wants to run as a non-AC cab.

“The fare has been finalised for the non-AC cabs but has not been notified yet. Once it is notified the operator would be given 90 days to begin service or else his agreement will be cancelled,” STA Director Vandana Disodia said, adding that there are three other operators interested in running non-AC cabs.
