Mining scam: After Reddy,CBI heat on Jaganmohan

Facing probe for allegedly amassing wealth illegally,Jaganmohan had distanced himself from Reddy.

The arrest of G Janardhan Reddy on Monday dealt a big blow to Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, even as the Congress government in Andhra Pradesh, which had initially sought the CBI investigation into illegal mining in December 2009,remained silent.

The same team from CBI’s Hyderabad Zone led by Joint Director V V Lakshminarayana, which is investigating the illegal mining case and arrested Janardhan Reddy on Monday,is also investigating Jaganmohan.

Facing a CBI probe for allegedly amassing wealth illegally,Jaganmohan on Monday distanced himself from the Reddy brothers with whom his family has had very friendly relations.

“Why are you asking me about Janardhan Reddy? This is not right. This is like hitting somebody below the belt. Why don’t you ask BJP or the Reddy brothers about it? Why me? What has Janardhan Reddy got to do with me. Just because Janardhan Reddy gets arrested you start asking me questions. I am telling you all, this is not right,” said the Kadapa MP,losing his cool when mediapersons sought his opinion about Reddy’s arrest.

Jaganmohan was in New Delhi on Monday to meet leaders of various Opposition parties to complain against the Congress and CBI for launching the investigation against him. He said he wanted to tell all the national party leaders about “the wrong path chosen by the CBI against me.”

“I have prepared a statement on how the CBI has launched a witch-hunt in Andhra. I will circulate it in the media. The CBI has taken a one-sided approach and is not moving in the right direction. I will meet leaders of all Opposition parties, the Prime Minister also, and tell them about it,’’ he said.

Monday’s developments caused more fissures among the 29 MLAs supporting Jaganmohan. Most of the MLAs who were slated to meet the Speaker today to urge him to accept their resignations did not turn up.

In Andhra,Reddy’s arrest is being seen as a prelude to the CBI cornering Jaganmohan. In fact,MLAs loyal to Jaganmohan today expressed apprehension that he could be next.

“Why has the CBI arrested Janardhan Reddy now? The stay on CBI investigation was vacated nine months ago, what was the CBI doing till now? All this is a conspiracy to implicate Jaganmohan Reddy,’’ said MLA from Parkal,Konda Surekha.
