Days after his trips to the homes of rape victims and Dalits who had been wronged prompted UP Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi to make alleged derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Mayawati, DGP Vikram Singh has been asked by the state government not to make these visits anymore.
Home Secretary Mahesh Gupta said the state government today withdrew its order asking the DGP to visit scenes of crimes against Dalits. Henceforth, the Range DIG and SP, he said, would undertake these trips while the DM would hand over relief cheques to victims.
Vikram Singh had visited 18 places across the state, often flying in a state helicopter to hand over compensation cheques. While Gupta did not give reasons for the change in order, Singh said: “Three orders clearly stated that senior officials would visit these spots... My visit depends on the seriousness of the incident. The compensation cheque is handed over to the victim or kin by the officer who first visits the spot.”
