After RS,copyright Bill gets nod in LS

The Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha on May 17.

Parliament passed the Copyright Act (Amendment) Bill on Tuesday with the Lok Sabha displaying a remarkable unity to push it through. The Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha on May 17.

The Bill seeks to provide lyricists,artistes and performers,deprived of their dues so far,with royalty over their creations. The Bill makes it mandatory for broadcasters — both radio and television — to pay royalty to owners of the copyright each time a work of art is broadcast. It bans persons from bringing out cover versions of any literary,dramatic or musical work for five years from the first recording of the original creation.

Piloting the Bill,HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said that producers had cornered governing rights of copyright societies. He said the Act had been amended to give authors the right to govern issues related to the rights to their creations.

Backing the Bill,Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj thanked Sibal for bringing forward the much needed legislation.

JD(U) president Sharad Yadav lauded Sibal. “I usually don’t agree with any of your work but on this,I am with you,” he said.

Direct subsidy on kerosene yielding good results,says minister

NEW DELHI: A project to provide direct subsidy on kerosene oil is yielding good results,the government told the Rajya Sabha. The pilot project in this regard in Rajasthan’s Alwar district has been undertaken by the ministry and data regarding the same is being compiled.

“Direct subsidy on kerosene is planned in future…We have to move towards it. It will be done using UID cards… We are benefiting from the pilot project,” said MoS for Petroleum and Natural Gas R P N Singh.
