After shootout, cops nab five planning robbery

Five persons were arrested while three others, including the son a of a former terrorist managed to flee, after a shootout at a farmhouse in Amritsar's Mattewal village on Tuesday. The gang was planning a major heist and had assembled at the farmhouse of Sital Singh Mattewal, a former terrorists who had formed the Dashmesh Regiment in 1989.

Acting on a tip off, a police team reached Mattewal's residence. "The gang members opened fire the police following which the personnel retaliated. They exchanged 25 rounds," SSP Amritsar Rural Preetpaul Singh Virk said. No one was injured in the shootout after which the police arrested five persons, while the kingpin Sulakhan Singh and two others escaped.

Police also recovered four pistols and two vehicles from the spot.
