After students’ protest,ILS law college extends date for admissions

After protests by students, the Indian Law Society (ILS) Law College has decided to extend its dates for admission up to June 23.

After protests by students, the Indian Law Society (ILS) Law College has decided to extend its dates for admission up to June 23. Earlier,on Wednesday evening, the college had declared June 16-20 as dates of admission for students from second year to fifth year.

“The college gave us only 24 hours to gather all our documents and pay the fees. We were told that demand drafts of only nationalised banks would be accepted. As I am not even there in the country now,it is nearly impossible for me to do so. With an authorisation letter from me,any of my friends could fill up the admission form, but then the college added the clause of getting it signed by an office staff of the college who happens to be on an indefinite leave,” said a student requesting anonymity.

A large number of students at ILS are not residents of Maharahstra and hence a common problem facing them is the non-availabilty of tickets for coming back to Pune on such a short notice. A substantial portion of them are also pursuing compuslory law interships with various firms outside the city, and are unable to come back leaving their interships incomplete.

However,by Thursday, the college decided to modify the terms of admissions after receiving several applications from students. The college has clarified that the demand drafts of nationalised banks are not mandatory. Also, the earlier announced dates for admissions to particular classes will also be modfified.

Vaijayanti Joshi, principal,ILS Law College, said,“We have recieved several requests from students for extending the dates,so we have now decided that the admissions will be open till classes begin on June 23. But we cannot extend it further as we need to finish the term within a stipulated period as per the UoP guidelines.”
