Afzal’s noose came from Buxar, for Rs 680

The rope that was used to hang Afzal Guru, who was convicted of the attack on the Parliament in 2001, was made exclusively for him — by the inmates of Bihar's Buxar jail — in 2006.

The rope was sent to Tihar in September 2006 and was stored there exclusively for Afzal for the last seven years, prison sources told The Sunday Express.

A Bihar prisons official confirmed that the approximate height and weight of Afzal was given to Buxar jail authorities and the rope was prepared in just two days.

It was then delivered to the Tihar officials, after they made a payment of Rs 680, the official said.

"The rope is made in such a manner that it can be used for years. We had received a requisition from Tihar Jail authorities for the rope. It was made only after certain specifications, such as height and weight of the convict, were given to us," the Buxar official said.

DG (Prisons) Vimla Mehra, confirmed that the rope from Buxar was stored for the execution of Afzal Guru.

Buxar Central Jail produces Manila ropes that are used to hang convicts.

The inmates of the jail are given professional training to manufacture them.

According to the jail officials, the length of the rope is 1.6 times more than the height of the convict. The thickness of the rope is proportional to the convict's weight. "Sixty-seven per cent relative humidity in open air is a basic requirement for making Manila rope, in addition to 6/20 yarn," the official said.

He said after the rope is manufactured, ripe banana, butter or wax is applied on it for three days to ensure that it is not slippery and is friction-less.
