Faced with opposition from their families to their marriage,a young couple in love attempted suicide by consuming poison in a garden near Swami Narayan temple at Adajan on Wednesday night.
While the boy died after primary treatment at a city hospital on Thursday afternoon,the girl is said to be in a critical condition. Police said the girls parents had consented to their marriage but the boys parents remained opposed to it.
As per details,Jatin Rana (25),resident of Mandarwaja in Salabatpura area,and Neelam Rathod (23),also a resident of same area,were in love,which was discovered by their parents a few months ago.
Jatin helped his father in the family business of running jari machines at home while Neelam was a third-year student of B Com at K P Commerce College at Athwalines.
The two were warned by their families to end their relationship and even disallowed to meet,a family source said.
When Neelams condition grew worse,her parents relented but Jatins parents remained unmoved. The two families even had had quarrels over the issue.
On Wednesday night,Jatin and Neelam reportedly left their houses on different pretexts and went to municipal garden at Adajan near Swami Narayan Temple. They are said to have consumed poison around 11 pm.
Some of the passerby spotted the couple lying unconscious in the garden after which they called 108 ambulance. The couple was rushed to New Civil hospital. After primary treatment,Jatin was declared dead while Neelam is still critical.
Govind Patel of Adajan police,who is investigating the case,said,The girls parents were earlier against their marriage but later they agreed. Jatins family members remained against their marriage. Jatin belonged to the Rana community while Neelam was from a lower caste.
Jatins brother Kalpesh said,We are shocked. We cannot believe he could take such a drastic step.
