The State Bank of India, once a dominant force in Delhis football circuit, was seen struggling to cope with the agility of those younger in age. With a slump in sports quota recruitment, the aged players surrendered meekly against the fresh leg attack of Collegians FC and were ousted 4-0 in the DSA B Division football tournament.
We have players who are on the wrong side of fifty. We cannot recruit young players because of the cut in the recruitment in the public sector and this is the reason why we dont stand a chance, a SBI official said.
The bankers tried to control the Collegians from scoring for the first seven minutes, but soon fell to their fitness levels. Rajesh Arya managed to breach their territory from the right flank when Vedant crossed an aerial volley. Arya took the responsibility and slammed a 25 metre hit to the left corner of the post. The wood-work further helped him in deflecting the ball to the back of the net.
While the Collegians enjoyed the lead, the bankers were seen sipping energy drinks to set themselves again for the hard run. The newly gained energy lasted only for 13 minutes though,as they were exhausted after conceding the second goal. Collegians Robin and George were great as a unit,as Robin guided a rolling cross by George to double the lead in the 20th minute.
It looked like no more than a practice session for the Collegians, still they were in no mood to waste chances. They struck again after two minutes, once again adding to the misery of the bankers. Arya made his presence felt for the second time as he passed the ball to Bhavook who dissected the SBI defense and chipped into the roof of the net. Striker Robin completed his brace in the 24th minute netting the ball through a cross from the winger George.
With four goals in the first half, the Collegians stepped off the gas after the break. They have secured 10 points in 4 matches while SBI are stuck on three from four games. The other match of the day between Young Sports and Columbus Youngsters ended in a goalless draw.
