Even as the viability report of Kamdhenu,a veterinary university,is yet to be tabled in the state Assembly,an executive committee formed by the Agriculture and Cooperation Department has decided to set up one in Sabarkantha district.

Gujarat was the first state to suggest a veterinary university way back in 1990. But the matter was kept on the backburner for unknown reasons even as other states such as Karnataka and West Bengal, which took up the initiative much later, set up veterinary universities.

N T Mehta,Gujarat State Veterinary Council president said: “Gujarat was the first state to suggest a Veterinary University in 1990. In fact, even an ordinance was passed to start a Veterinary (Kamdhenu) University in the state. But due to some reasons, the Veterinary University failed to come up in the state.”

The state government did take a fresh cognisance of the issue. But even as the new ordinance of the veterinary university was to be discussed in the Gujarat General Assembly session slated on February 17,the matter was delayed as the legal department was held up in examining the report.

State Minister of Agriculture Dilip Sanghani said: “The report is likely to be discussed in the next Assembly session. Meanwhile, the Government of Gujarat (GoG) has formed a new committee which has decided on the location of the veterinary university at Sabarkantha.”

P N Roy Chaudhary,Principal Secretary,Agriculture and Cooperation Department said: “There is no separate Veterinary University in the state. Therefore, the department has to boot new laws and regulations in the university which will be passed in the legislative Assembly. There are several executive committees which have been formed for this purpose; one of the executive committee has already taken a decision on the location of the university at Sabarkantha.”

Mehta said it was indeed good news that the location of the university has been decided.
