Two new radars for aircraft surveillance have been installed at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. It will be functional by the end of the month as the officials are waiting for final approval from Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA),New Delhi.
These two radars have replaced more than 15-year-old radars which were outdated and used to frequently blink. The radars known as Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR) and Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) are the basic model that help the controllers to check aircraft movements in the sky. They are also known as eyes of air traffic controllers (ATC).
The main function of these radars is to locate flights up to 300 miles and gather information such as flights identity,height,weather condition among others. Officials said that these radars were bought from Czech Republic-based ELDIS Pardubice at a cost of 15 lakh Euro.
The replacement of radars are part of modernisation across the airports runs by Airport Authority of India (AAI). Similar radars are being replaced at many other airports in the country including Kolkata,Chennai,Kochi,Thiruvananthapuram,Guwahati,Calicut and Bangalore.
The installation has been completed and the radars are fully functional. We just need a procedural certificate from DGCA which we are expecting to come by next week, said a senior airport official.
The existing radars called Instrument Landing System (ILS) is said to be the oldest in the country which is outdated. ILS (popularly known as radars) was installed at Ahmedabad airport 15 years ago.
The air traffic controllers here handle nearly 600 aircraft movements a day. Sources said that managing aircraft movements through ILS was getting difficult as it used to develop technical snag frequently.
