  • A school teacher from Ahmedabad – Neetu Shukla – will represent India at the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) at the three-day international conference in Bangkok from September 26.

Shukla, a teacher of English at the government-aided Rajasthan India School in Ahmedabad, is also the deputy secretary of the All India Federation of Teachers Organisation.

Selected two months ago as a SAARC member, Shukla will give an overview on the ‘Impact of global crisis on gender equality, union, education and society’ with special focus on women and girl child at the summit.

Also a proposal focusing on the needs of the each participant country compiled region-wise will be submitted to the umbrella organisation ‘Education International’.

The exercise is part of the preparation for the international seminar to be held in Los Angeles in 2011 where a final decision will be taken on the acceptance of region-wise proposals and extension of monetary help.

All the countries have been asked to present data on trafficking of girl child. “In the proposal, hardcore realities about the status of women in the society will be presented. The fact that India is lacking in monetary support from foreign countries will be highlighted to draw the international attention to the weaker section in India and find a way to improve the education system by correlating it with the status in the Western countries,” said Shukla.
