AICTE team inspects PVPP College

The controversies surrounding Padmabhushan Vasantdada Patil Pratishthan's (PVPP) College of Engineering at Sion does not seem to end. While a four-member committee appointed by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) Saturday initiated an inquiry against the management, the Kurla Tahsildar issued a notice asking it to pay Rs 18 crore as premium for two unauthorised floors.

The college has been facing allegations of malpractice in appointing staff, flouting AICTE and Directorate of Technical Education norms, and submitting false documents to Shikshan Shulka Samiti to increase fees.

The college is facing an allegation of running classes from two additional floors.

AICTE chairman Dr S S Mantha said they received several complaints from teachers and students against the management. "There are numerous allegations like providing false information to AICTE and offering courses illegally. There were complaints that the college had given false information about facilities for approval. Our committee visited the college and verified documents. They will inspect the campus. We will decide on action once we receive the report," said Mantha.

Dr K T V Reddy, principal, said it was a routine visit. "The committee asked us to provide documents pertaining to the college and courses. They verified the documents and left. The committee inspected the campus."

The Tahsildar, meanwhile, has given a week for the college to pay or face action. "The premium has been pending for two years. Last year we sealed their bank accounts. They moved court and got a stay. This time we have issued a notice and if they fail to pay we will take action."
