Aiming for Third Front,Mulayam to discuss 2014 polls at national meet

Mulayam wanted meet to be held in Kolkata as he is eyeing a non-Cong,non-BJP political front.

On the eve of the Samajwadi Party’s two-day national executive, party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav arrived at Kolkata on Tuesday. Other senior leaders have already reached Kolkata. The only senior leader who is yet to arrive is Azam Khan. He is scheduled to reach on Wednesday.

The meeting will begin at 9 am with the 88-strong national executive committee giving “a final shape to the party’s political agenda”,said Shyamdhar Pandey, general secretary of the party’s Bengal unit. The meeting will also chalk out the electoral strategy for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

The meet was supposed to be held on July 10 and 11,but was postponed reportedly because of a chill in the relations between the SP and Trinamool following the former backtracking on its support to Mamata Banerjee during the Presidential poll.

“We are going to discuss the strategy for 2014 general elections,” said Kiranmoy Nanda,SP general secretary.

The Kolkata meet will coincide with the completion of six months of the Akhilesh government.

As per reports,Mulayam insisted on Kolkata as the venue. The party has held its convention thrice in Kolkata — in 1993,1996 and 2010. The party considers Kolkata as the “nerve centre” of politics,as per Nanda. Party sources said Mulayam also wanted the meet to be held in Kolkata as he is eyeing a non-Congress,non-BJP political front. A message from Kolkata with non-Congress and non-BJP parties ruling most eastern states can help achieve that goal, sources added.

In this backdrop,on Tuesday the party came down heavily against the UPA on the issue of corruption charging that the alleged scam in coal block allotments was “bigger” than the 2G spectrum allocation case.

“When the entire truth comes out, people will be surprised that it is a much bigger scam than 2G scam… the Prime Minister should take initiative in ordering a probe and cancel all coal block allocations,” said SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav.
