Air Marshal Gill was commissioned in the Flying Branch of the Indian Air Force in 1977 and has more than 7,000 hours of accident and incident-free flying to his credit, says NDA
Air Marshal Kulwant Singh Gill took over as the new Commandant of the National Defence Academy (NDA) on Tuesday. Air Marshal Gill was commissioned in the Flying Branch of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 1977 and has more than 7,000 hours of accident and incident free flying to his credit. He is also a Qualified Flying Instructor, said a release issued by NDA.
On December 30, Newsline had reported that Air Marshal Gill is likely to take over as the NDA commandant, replacing Lt Gen Ashok Singh. Gill's appointment marks the beginning of IAF's tenure to hold the office of the NDA commandant.
"In his illustrious career spanning 35 years so far, the Air Marshal has had the distinction of commanding various frontline bases. He also has the distinction of being the Contingent Commander for the first UN mission to Congo. While commanding Air Force Station at Leh, he was instrumental in re-commissioning of two airfields. During his command, Air Force Station, Leh was declared the Pride of Western Air Command," the release said.
"The Air Marshal is highly decorated. He was conferred the Presidential award of Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) in 1990, Yudh Seva Medal in 2005 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2010. Besides, he has also been commended by Air Officer Commanding in Chief twice and also by the chiefs of air and army staff. A keen sportsman and an avid adventurist, Air Marshal Gill was a member of seventh and eighth expeditions to Antarctica," the release added.
Commodore D S Chouhan assumes charge of INS Shivaji
Commodore D S Chouhan assumed command of INS Shivaji, the premier marine engineering training establishment of the Indian Navy from Commodore P J Rangachari on December 29 at a ceremonial parade."Commissioned in the Navy on March 31 1986, the Commodore has done his Higher Defence Management Course at College of Defence Management in 2007-08. He was honoured with the Nausena Medal (D) in 2003. He held several key assignments afloat and ashore," a release issued by INS Shivaji said.
