Air travel figures rise despite higher fares

NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 12: In what could provide some succour to ailing airlines, air travel in the country grew significantly last month despite high fares, with the total number of passengers carried by domestic carriers rising by over 17 per cent in October.

The total number of passengers flown by domestic carriers in October rose to 31.33 lakh from 26.76 lakh in the previous month, according to the official traffic data released today. Market leader Jet Airways continued to attract more passengers than any other domestic airline in the country, with 6.17 lakh passengers using its service in the said period.

Jet was closely followed by Air India (domestic) with 5.65 lakh and Kingfisher Airlines with 4.45 lakh passengers. Among the low-cost fliers, Air Deccan, now called Kingfisher Red, carried 4.18 lakh passengers, amassing a market share of 13.3 per cent in October.

Jet garnered a market share of 19.7 per cent, while Air India (domestic) cornered 18 per cent and Kingfisher 14.2. Air Deccan was followed by IndiGo with 4.02 lakh travellers, SpiceJet with 2.97 lakh, JetLite 2.54 lakh, GoAir 75,000, Paramount 50,000 and MDLR 7,000, the figures showed.

Air Deccan and IndiGo closely followed the full-service carriers to gain market shares of 13.3 and 12.8 per cent respectively. No-frill carrier MDLR logged the maximum seat factor of 76.2 per cent, followed by 69.2 of Tamil Nadu-based all-business class Paramount Airways, 68.9 of JetLite and 66 of IndiGo.

Among the full-service airlines, Jet Airways was way ahead with a seat factor of 64.5 per cent followed by Air India’s 59 and Kingfisher’s 58, the figures showed.
