AITUC chief talks of ‘armed retaliation’,Centre asks state to resolve

The Centre on Tuesday asked the Haryana government to take steps to resolve the workers’ agitation in Gurgaon.

The Centre on Tuesday asked the Haryana government to take steps to resolve the workers’ agitation in Gurgaon.

The Centre’s intervention came on a day AITUC,the trade union leading the strike, warned of a possibility of workers “taking up arms” in retaliation.

AITUC chief Gurudas Dasgupta today said,“We want a peaceful settlement but use of arms by private security guards hired by the management is creating a dangerous situation. Workers are being attacked (and) in such a situation,I will not blame the workers if they take up arms in retaliation — I will support them.”

Dasgupta,a Lok Sabha MP from West Bengal, sought the Centre’s intervention. He also asked the Haryana government to disband “private armies” engaged by the management bodies in the industrial hub to take on the workers.

Union Labour Secretary P C Chaturvedi spoke to Haryana Labour Secretary Raj Kumar today, and the message was clear: resolve the agitation quickly, and amicably.

“We want the issue to be sorted out quickly and amicably so that good industrial relations are maintained in Gurgaon and neighbouring areas,” Chaturvedi told Newsline. It is learnt that Chief Labour Commissioner S K Mukhopadhyay is also in touch with the state Labour Commissioner and other officials.
