The induction of Shahjahanpur MP Jitin Prasada in the ministry is a part of the Congress’s plan to revive the party in Uttar Pradesh. As a Brahmin MP, whose father late Jitendra Prasad had considerable influence in UP, Jitin could help the party regain ground. He also remains a favourite of Sonia Gandhi despite the fact that his father had challenged her to the post of party president in 2000.

Today’s reshuffle in the Council of Ministers could be the last one for the UPA Government with barely a year to go for the full term. The Prime Minister, however, said, “In all such matters (reshuffle), there is no finality.”

New Ministers of State
