A Family Court on Wednesday dismissed a divorce petition filed by singer Adnan Sami’s wife Sabah Galadari, stating that the marriage was not as per the Muslim personal law and she had not complied with the ‘Halala’ formalities under the law.
Under ‘Halala’,if a woman divorces her husband and wishes to remarry him,she has to marry another person and stay married for at least six months before returning to her former husband.
Sami had argued that the marriage was invalid under the law as Sabah had not observed the ritual. Sami was married to Sabah between 2001 to 2004,and they had remarried in 2005.
Sabah had sought divorce and a compensation of Rs 5 crore besides a refund of Rs 5.3 crores allegedly paid by her to Sami’s family members.
She had approached the family court early this year stating that Sami had mentally abused her and she found it difficult to stay together.
