13-year-old Eettee Mehta of Gujarat ousted third seed Ravnoor Kaur of Chandigarh to claim the U-16 singles’ title
Seeded played suffered a shock when their less fancied opponents toppled them to win the respective titles in the finals of IDBI AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament at the CLTA Stadium,Sector 10 on Friday. Showing the way to others was second seed Chandigarh lad Ajay Yadav who continued from where he left in the last match and produced a creditable victory to topple top seed Arjun Khade of Maharashtra in the final to win the boys’ Under-16 singles title.
Ajay,a product of Chandigarh Academy of Rural Tennis (CHART),played with complete authority and did not seem in awe of his much fancied opponent. Playing before the home crowd,Ajay took more than two and half hours to defeat Arjun. Executing shots to perfection,Ajay went on to win the first set by 6-4. His concentration wavered a bit in the second set and Arjun Khade took advantage of this and secured the set by 6-4. As the match moved into the deciding set, both the players went for points and there were some nervous moments on the court. With the sun blazing over their head, the players had a hard time in moving on the court. However,Ajay kept his cool and executing some shots which Arjun found hard to return,he went on to win the third set by 6-3 to lay his hands on the title. He won 6-4,4-6,6-3.
Meanwhile, second seed Ishaque Eqbal,CHART trainee who hails from West Bengal, was another seeded player who lost at the hands of player seeded lower than him. Ishaque failed to produce his form and suffered a 1-6,2-6 loss to sixth seed Garvit Batra of Delhi in the boy’s Under-12 singles category. Garvit Batra looked in complete control of the game and therefore won the match to claim the title. With Ishaque failing to get Chandigarh a title, all the hopes were pinning on third seed Ravnoor Kaur,a CLTA trainee. However the hopes came crashing down when the giant killer who had upset top seed Parminder Kaur of Punjab in the girls’ Under-16 singles semis, lost the match to sixth seed Eetee Mehta. Ravnoor failed to reproduce the top form that saw her defeat Parminder while Eetee looked in no mood to let go off the opportunity and defeated her opponent by 6-3,6-2 in straight sets.
The disappointments did not seem to cease as top seed duo of Parminder Kaur and Likita Shetty were outplayed by second seed Rajbir Kaur and Rimpledeep Kaur 6-4,0-6,11-3 in the girls’ Under-16 doubles category. The Punjab duo of Rajbir and Rimpledeep failed to win a single game in the second set after winning the first set by 6-4. Defeat was looming large on them when they got their act together and surprised the top seed by securing the third set by 11-3.
Roma Chandran was the lone top seed player who justified her seeding by prevailing over second seed Riya Bhatia of Delhi in straight sets 6-2,6-2 in the girls’ Under-12 final.Roma exhibited some powerful back-hand that helped her win the first set by 6-2. Continuing with her form, she went on to win the second set by same margin.
Meanwhile, the top seed duo of Arjun Khade and Yash Deshpandey defeated second seed Garry S Amor (Chandigarh) and Madhurjya Dutta (Assam) by 6-4,6-4.
