Ajit opposes Bill, wants changes

Civil Aviation Minister and RLD president Ajit Singh believes that the constitutional amendment Bill for reservation in promotions in government jobs, which has been passed by the Rajya Sabha, needs changes in order to provide a level play field to all sections of society.

Singh said RLD was not in favour of the Bill as it was passed by the Rajya Sabha. He refused to say whether he had opposed the Bill when the UPA government decided to move it in Parliament.

Asked about RLD's response when the Bill comes up for voting in the Lok Sabha in the budget session, Singh said "We will see that at that time."

Singh said there should be debate on the issue and a decision should be taken in the

interests of all sections of the society. "People face various problems in routine works of the government offices.If merit factor was removed from promotions, the situation will deteriorate in government offices and that will cause more inconvenience to people," he said.

He said there were various sections in society who deserved to get reservation but were not getting the benefit. "Before making any amendment in the Constitution, the government should consider interest of all people."

The government should also review whether reservation has achieved its objective in past several decades, he added.

Singh said the political parties which ruled UP in the past 15 years were not serious about development of the state and were more concerned about castes and criminals.

The Civil Aviation ministry had planned to develop nine airports in UP, but the SP government was not responding to communications from the ministry and the Airport Authority of India.

"At least 24 letters have been sent to the UP government by me, the ministry and AAI but UP government sent acknowledgment of barely two of these letters," Singh said.
