  • Lok Sabha MP and Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) founder Badruddin Ajmal has nominated his son Abdur Rahman Ajmal as the party candidate for the November 7 by-election to the South Salmara Assembly constituency.

Ajmal Sr had vacated the seat in May on being elected to the Lok Sabha from the Dhubri constituency. The Mumbai-based perfume tycoon's younger brother Sirajuddin Ajmal is already an AUDF MLA, having won from Jamunamukh in 2006.

Abdur Rahman’s main rival will be Wajed Ali Choudhury of the Congress, who had lost to Badruddin in the 2006 Assembly election.

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) also named its candidate for the coming bypolls, fielding Shib Charan Sahu from Dhekiajuli.
