The Ajmer Superintendent of police, Rajesh Meena, was arrested late Wednesday night by the Anti-Corruption Bureau after unaccounted money amounting to Rs 2.05 lakh was found from his house during a raid.
The raid was conducted following a tip-off that the police officer was extorting money from SHOs posted under him. The seized amount is said to have been collected by one Ramdev, a resident of Jodhpur, from the respective police station in-charges across Ajmer and delivered to Meena.
Inspector General, ACB, Umesh Mishra, in an official statement said that the SP has been arrested under charges of amassing disproportionate income and misuse of office. He said that Meena was quizzed on the source of money but he was unable to explain it. When other rooms of the house were checked, another Rs 3 lakh were recovered taking the amount to a total of Rs 5.05 lakh.
The ACB has also recovered a personal diary from Meena's house that is said to have names and accounts of more money amassed from several sources. The ACB is investigating the findings from the diary too.
Meena was suspended from office on Thursday after being charged with extorting money from SHOs posted under him. He was presented in court and thereafter sent on remand for a day. The case will be heard again on Friday.
