Akhilesh in Jaipur today to address meet against quota in promotion

After opposing the constitutional amendment Bill for reservation in promotion during the winter session of Parliament, the Samajwadi Party is out to cash in on the issue. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is travelling to Jaipur on Saturday where he will be honoured by the Samta Andolan Samiti (SAS), an organisation of the Rajasthan government employees, which was active in the agitation against reservation in promotion.

This is the first time that Akhilesh Yadav will address a gathering of anti-reservation employees. Even employees of the UP government ran an agitation against reservation in promotion, with tacit support of the state government, but the chief minister did not address them

After becoming CM, this will be Akhilesh's second visit to Rajasthan. Earlier, he had visited his alma mater Dholpur Military School in Rajasthan during its golden jubilee celebrations on July 16.

After coming to power in Uttar Pradesh, the SP had scrapped reservation in promotion following a Supreme Court judgment which quashed the reservation policy that was introduced by the previous Mayawati government. Later, when the constitutional amendment Bill was moved in Parliament and employees went on strike in protest, the SP government made no effort to ensure that the offices functioned normally. Nor did it intervene when the striking employees targeted offices of the Congress and the Bhartiya Janata Party in Lucknow for supporting the Bill.

Explaining their decision, Yogendra Singh Rathore, vice-president of SAS, said, "We appreciate the steps taken by the UP government. It was due to Akhilesh Yadav's efforts that the Supreme Court orders could be implemented in UP, benefiting the employees. Therefore, we are felicitating him.''

Rathore said Akhilesh Yadav had confirmed his participation in the event and his visit will provide the much-needed fillip to the SAS agitation in Rajasthan. "We want to corner the Congress government in Rajasthan for denying our right. After Akhilesh Yadav's visit we will intensify our stir," Rathore stated.
