Most of the 400 fishermen stranded in 60 boats, some 40 nautical miles off the Daman coast, returned to the shore, even as reports indicated that cyclonic storm 'Phyan' will weaken in the Arabian sea.
Fishermen in over 30 boats have returned and others are set to reach the coast, official sources said.
However, coastal areas of south Gujarat continued to be on alert. Light to moderate rainfall was recorded in some parts of the coastal districts like Bhavnagar, Amreli, Surat, Bharuch, Valsad and Navsari.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the situation in the evening and the Weather Department said the state was out of danger as the storm has weakened, an official release said.
However, heavy to very heavy rains are likely in coastal areas in the next 24 hours and the wind speed is likely to be between 45 and 55 kmph, it said, adding that district administrations have been asked to be on alert as a precautionary measure.
Collector of Union Territory Daman, Vikas Anand, said most of the 60 boats with 400 fishermen, who were stranded in the Arabian sea, have returned.
"The fishermen who had gone for fishing two days ago were alerted about the storm by the Indian Coast Guard using helicopters and Doniears," Anand said.
"Since evening over 30 boats with fishermen have returned, while others are on their way," he added.
