The Punjab government today earmarked a record sum of Rs 130 crore for payment of Shagun to the girls of families from the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) those having annual income less than Rs 30,000 on their marriage. It has released Rs 27 crore for next three months for the beneficiaries of the Shagun scheme in the state.
Gulzar Singh Ranike,minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes in Punjab,said here today that for the first time it has been decided that Rs 15,000 Shagun would be credited in the bank accounts of beneficiaries before the marriage through online banking.
BPL families and blue card holders would not have to submit income certificate and other candidates would have to attach income certificate attested by competent authority.
He said that this benefit of Shagun was available only for two girls in a family.
He said that every month Rs 9 crore would be released for all the districts in the state.
Earlier,this scheme was meant only for the people belonging to the scheduled castes,but now the scheme is also extended to economically poor girls of backward class,upper class and Christian community who have an annual income less than Rs 30,000.
The minister added that eligible girls would have to apply for the shagun before the marriage or on the date of marriage and no form would be accepted after the marriage. The form should give the bank account number of the beneficiary so that shagun amount could be credited directly in their account.
