Allegations of victim’s friend to be probed

In the wake of the friend of the 23-year-old gangrape victim, the sole eyewitness in the case, alleging lapses on the part of the Delhi Police on the night of the incident, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) ordered an inquiry into the allegations and set up a joint-secretary level committee to probe the charges and counter-charges.

The woman's friend, in an interview to Zee News, had alleged that police response to their distress call was slow.

According to MHA, a joint-secretary level officer of the ministry will investigate the veracity of the claim by the friend that even after reaching the spot on the night of December 16, police were arguing over jurisdiction of the case and were reluctant to lift the woman, thereby wasting crucial time.

The probe will also look into the counter-claim by the Delhi Police and check the log books of the PCR vans, which came to the spot where the woman and her friend were dumped after the gangrape.

After the shocking disclosure by the 28-year-old friend of the victim, the Delhi Police came in defence of their personnel and said there were no lapses on their part in providing assistance to the victim and her friend.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Vivek Gogia said there could have been no jurisdictional issue with regard to PCR vans. "There was no issue over jurisdiction of the case as PCR vans do not operate under police stations. Their operation is regulated by the control room," he said.
