  • Al-Qaida has claimed responsibility for an attack that killed three senior Yemeni security officers this week.

Al-Qaida said in an Internet statement that the attack was to support "our brothers" imprisoned in Yemen. The authenticity of the message could not be independently verified, but it was posted on a militant Web site often used by al-Qaida.

Gunmen ambushed a government motorcade in a southern province Tuesday, killing three senior security officers.

Yemen, the ancestral homeland of Osama bin Laden, has a strong al-Qaida presence. It has cooperated with the U.S. in fighting terrorism but has struggled to confront Islamic extremists.
