Chief minister Ashok Chavan is set to launch the city’s first monorail at the Acres Club in Chembur on Monday.

Chief minister Ashok Chavan is set to launch the city’s first monorail at the Acres Club in Chembur on Monday. The launch,to have been done by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on November 29,was postponed due to the terror attack on November 26.

The 20-km monorail would start at Jacob Circle in south Mumbai and terminate at Chembur via Wadala. The Rs 2,460-crore project,awarded to Larsen and Toubro and Malaysia-based Scoomi Engineering,is to be completed in 30 months.

The monorail would supplement the suburban railway,the buses besides the metro under construction. Apart from the monorail launch,Chavan would also launch a skywalk and a foot-over-bridge at Chembur.

Deputy CM Chhagan Bhujbal will also attend the function to launch the monorail project,along with ministers Nawab Malik and Hasan Mushrif.

MP Gurudas Kamat and city mayor Shuba Raul will be present at the function.
