Srinagar, August 6: All eight members of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) on Wednesday submitted their resignations to J-K Governor N N Vohra, who is also the chairman of the board.

The members who resigned are Justice G D Sharma (retd), Prof Vishnu Murti Shastri, Sunil Sachdeva, Manoj Gaur, Dr Vimla Dhar, Professor Neerja Mattoo, Raghu Modi and Dr Arun Kumar. Only four members are from the state.

“The resignations are under the active consideration of the Governor,” said SASB spokesman Mandan Mantoo.

The mass resignations, according to sources, could well be the first major step to break the current impasse on the forestland transfer issue. On Tuesday, the Governor had hinted that he was not averse to the idea of giving up the chairmanship of the board to restore peace in the state.

In a recent meeting with the Governor in Jammu, the Shri Amarnath Sangarash Samiti (SASS) which is spearheading the protests had mentioned that the induction of eminent persons from Jammu and Kashmir regions would inspire confidence in the functioning of the board.

Besides, the only Kashmiri Pandit organisation in the Valley — Kashmiri Pandit Sangarsh Samiti (KPSS) — had also asked the Government to hand over the control of the SASB and other religious places to Kashmiri Pandits staying in the Valley.
