Amarnath yatra: Guv assesses status of snow melting

Vohra inspected the Baltal base camp and reviewed the ongoing work.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra on Saturday undertook an aerial reconnaissance of two routes to the holy cave shrine of Amaranth to assess the status of snow melting and inspected ongoing works at camps along the track.

“The Governor,who is also the chairman of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board,conducted an aerial visit for getting a first hand infomation about the melting of snow on Baltal and Pahalgam routes,” an official spokesman said.

Vohra inspected the Baltal base camp and reviewed the ongoing work relating to internal pathways,accommodation for pilgrims,toilets,baths and water and electric supplies.

The official yatra is scheduled to commence on June 29 but several right-wing outfits like the VHP have threatened to start the annual pilgrimage on June 15.

The Governor directed the Shrine Board CEO to ensure deployment of adequate workforce for clearing snow and making fully operational yatra tracks.

“Once the tracks are made operational,all requisite facilities should be put on ground at camps and in the shrine area,” the Governor said.

He directed that rate cards for hiring ponies and labourers,and helicopter fares must be prominently displayed at various locations for the benefit of pilgrims.
