As part of upgradation process, the Chaudhary Charan Singh (Amausi) Airport,Lucknow is all set to advance its Instrument Landing System (ILS) from the existing category I to category II.
The new system,CAT-II,will enable the pilots to land aircraft even when the runway visibility is just 350 metres. The upgraded system will help them during fog and heavy rainfall. The existing landing system at the airport allows operations only when the visibility is minimum 800 metres. The instrument landing system is a ground-based system that provides guidance to an aircraft in approaching and landing on a runway by a combination of radio signals and high-intensity lighting arrays.
By November, the airport will have CAT-II instrument landing system operational. The lights required for CAT-II have already been installed, said Atul Dikshit,Director,Amausi Airport. The officials said the site for the antennae,a part of ILS,had been finalised but it needs to be cleared of the surrounding construction.
Currently, there are seven houses near the location of the antennae. These structures may cause a reflection of signals from the antennae leading to disturbance in communication with the pilot. The district administration has been requested to remove these constructions at the earliest, Dikshit said. The upgradation will surely help in getting more international and domestic airlines to Lucknow airport. Because of low visibility conditions, especially during winters, flights are often diverted to other airports like Kanpur,Varanasi or Delhi causing inconvenience to both passengers and the airport administration, said another official.
