Ambala police have arrested eight people and confiscated their vehicles under a special drive against illegal mining in the rivers flowing in Ambala. It is alleged that those arrested hail from Saharanpur (UP) and had come to Ghaggar river with trucks and tractors and started filling their vehicles with sand and stone when the police team conducted the raid. All were booked under Sections 379 and 188 IPC.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has banned mining of rivers in the state. However,illegal mining of rivers continue by the mining mafia,active in the state,in utter violation of the ban.
Despite strict vigil by the Mining department and police,the mining mafia continue to indulge in illegal mining from Ghaggar,Tangri and Markanda. The mafia allegedly acting under the blessing of influential individuals occasionally indulge in violent acts to prevent officials from doing their duty.
There was an incident earlier when some mafia men attempted to run over a tehsildar with a tractor when he tried to prevent them from illegally mining in the Yamuna river near Yamunanagr. In view of the repeated incidents of violence,Ambala Police Commissioner formed anti-mining teams to prevent illegal mining in the districts of Ambala,Yamunanagar and Panchkula.
