For an integrated transport system, the Ambala Division has proposed linking of metro stations with railway stations in the tri-city. Like in Delhi, this will facilitate exchange of inter-city and intra-city train passengers from railway stations to metro stations.
The Ambala Division has mooted the proposal, predicting that passengers travelling in trains would like to to board the metro for their onward journey from the railway station.
In the proposal, attempt has been made to link the Chandigarh railway station with a metro station.
“A detailed proposal has been chalked out to interlink metro corridors with railway stations, so that train passengers do not hunt for a travel mode to reach the nearest metro station. Moreover, Metro would not entirely serve its purpose if it is not linked with railway stations. Thus, both modes of travel would be linked,” Ambala Divisional Railway Manager H K Jaggi told Newsline. “The Chandigarh railway station will be connected to the nearest metro station through a subway or underpass.”
The division has planned this connectivity on the lines of the Delhi Junction and the New Delhi railway stations, which are connected to metro stations.
The proposal was recently submitted to the Railway Headquarters in New Delhi.
In the longer run, another proposal under the interlinking project includes extension of train services adjoining the metro corridors.
“With the expansion of metro routes in the future, the connectivity between the two will also be enhanced. For instance, the metro expansion to Mohali will be connected with the Mohali railway station. The division wants to work in tandem with the progress on metro,” Jaggi said.
